Detroit Wins the Stanley Cup!
The Detroit Red Wings have won their first cup since the 2001-2002 NHL season. And fourth in 11 years.
Nicklas Lidstrom became the first ever European captain to hoist the Stanley cup. Lidstrom has been with the Red Wings is whole career and is a perfect candidate for the first ever European captain to win the Stanley cup.
Henrik Zetterberg won the Conn Smythe Trophy with 13 goals and 27 points. With winning the Stanley Cup, Zetterberg and two other members of the Red Wings team (Niklas Kronwall & Mikael Samuelsson) became members of the Triple Gold Club. Which means you have won the Stanley Cup, Olympic Gold, and World Championship gold.

The Not so Mighty Ducks
Not long ago, the Anaheim Ducks gave up the name 'Mighty Ducks Of Anaheim.' Maybe they need the Mighty put back into their name.
Only a handful of games left before halfway through the season, the Ducks are a .500 team and getting a point per game. The Ducks have let in 99 goals, thats fourth worst in their conference, and have only scored 85 times, thats fifth worst in their conference. Or it could be the penalty minutes. With a total of 674 penalty minutes, they rank first in the league. Second would be the Flyers knocking up 567 minutes. The Ducks are averaging just above 20 penalty minutes a game. Why the high numbers?
The high numbers could be there because of Pronger being the captain having the highest number of penalty minutes. But Pronger also has the third highest point total on the team.
So maybe the penalty minutes are not whole problem, but getting the 20 minutes per game down a little wont hurt a bit.
Another big reason could be the retirements of Teemu Selanne and Scott Niedermayer. Good news for the Ducks though, Niedermayer is set and ready to go! But making room for Niedermayer will be tough. Rumors have it Mathieu Schneider is on the trading block.
Hopefully, at the halfway point of the season, the defending Stanley Cup Champions can turn their season around and please get the penalty minutes down!

Crosby wins 2007 Lou Marsh Award
Sid the Kid, walks away with another great honour, receiving the Lou Marsh Award for being Canada's top athlete of 2007.
At only 20 years of age, Sidney Crosby, the next great one, Sid the Kid, what ever you want to name him, has accomplished so much. He is the Pittsburgh Penguins' franchise record for assists and points in a season by a rookie, youngest player to be voted to the NHL All-Star Game, youngest player in NHL history to be named a full team captain, the latest Hart Memorial Trophy. The list goes on and on.
But did he really deserve this award? Some say yes, some say no. Some say Steve Nash should have won the award, putting up career numbers. But he came up short of a third consecutive MVP title. He also stated he was never going to play for Canada again.
Another candidate, Vincent Lecavalier, who played phenomenal throughout the 2006-2007, setting career highs, has continued playing that way well into the 2007-2008 NHL season. Some say he is the best all around hockey player in the game today.
But being the best all around hockey player in the league may not always land you the Lou Marsh award. What will , is winning the Art Ross Trophy and Lester B. Pearson Award. In only your second season in the NHL.
Another reason could be, Sid the Kid was one of the main reasons for the Penguins great success and making it to the playoffs since the 2000-2001 season.
The 2000-2001 season was the year Mario Lemieux came out of retirement, he was also the last hockey player to win the Lou Marsh Award in 1993.
